The Disconnect Between Legal Education and Legal Practice

Legal education today equips students with a strong foundation in legal theory. Law schools across the country offer a wide-ranging curriculum covering numerous subjects designed to build analytical thinking and conceptual understanding of the law.

However, when students step out of the classroom and into the courtroom, many encounter a significant gap between what they have studied and what legal practice actually demands. While theoretical knowledge is essential, the practice of law requires several practical skills that are often not sufficiently emphasised in academic training. Skills such as legal drafting, client counselling, courtroom etiquette, trial preparation, and advocacy are crucial for effective litigation. Yet, these skills receive limited structured training in many law programmes.

As a result, many graduates find themselves uncertain when confronted with real-world legal tasks whether it is drafting a legal notice, preparing pleadings, advising a client, or presenting arguments before a court. This gap between theory and practice also contributes to another noticeable trend: only a small percentage of law graduates choose litigation as a career path. The absence of practical exposure during law school often affects students’ confidence in entering courtroom practice.

Bridging this gap requires a more balanced approach to legal education one that combines strong theoretical learning with structured practical training. Incorporating exercises such as drafting practice, mock trials, client counselling sessions, and courtroom simulations can better prepare students for the realities of legal practice.

Strengthening practical training in law schools will not only benefit students but will also contribute to building a more confident and competent legal profession.
